Vion's Cambuslang staff unsure on future

Nov 21 2012

by Douglas Dickie, Rutherglen Reformer

Workers at the Vion plant in Cambuslang admit they have no idea if their jobs will be saved.

Nervous staff were still in the dark about the future of the plant yesterday (Tuesday), 24 hours after the Dutch company announced they were selling their UK businesses.

Brenda Meikle, from Cambuslang, has worked there for 23 years and only found out her job was under threat when she saw the news on TV.

When asked by the Reformer about what might happen, she said: “I don’t know any more than you do. I only found out on the news last night.

“The factory has been sold a few times. If it happens, it happens.”

Trainer Sandra Murray, also from Cambuslang, said: “We don’t know anything.

“I hope that the company can survive. When Vion took over Grampian it was the exact same thing, so we are hopeful.”

The Reformer understands there have been rumours about the sale for weeks, but the information was only relayed to workers on an “ad-hoc” basis.

But another worker, who didn’t want to be named, said: “We’ve been told that nothing will really change.

“We don’t know what’s going on . It’s quite a busy place so there is obviously a market.”

Meanwhile, Glasgow SNP MSP, Bob Doris, vowed to meet workers and take up their case with the Scottish Government.

He said: “I will be working closely with the Scottish Government to ensure all avenues are explored to keep Cambuslang open.”
