Rutherglen Shopping Centre owners issue 'bear with us' plead as parking work begins

THE owners of Rutherglen Shopping Centre have issued a ‘bear with us’ plea after locals complained following renovation work to the car park.

In last week’s Reformer we revealed that Moorgarth, who bought the facility earlier this year, were planning a £300,000 upgrade to the car park in the centre.

Car park refurbishment company Matrix, whose head offices are in Bristol, will be carrying out the repairs which commenced on October 8 and takes roughly five to six weeks to finish.

Sections of the car park will be closed off until the works have been completed.

Currently there are about 225 parking spaces, however once the refurbishment is complete Moorgrath estimate there will be 235.

Improvements will involve changing the layout, improving the lighting and drainage and repainting the car park.

However with work having started disgruntled residents have said the layout is far from ideal, and that it is causing confusion.

One shopper said: “I am absolutely furious. I almost crashed twice with cars coming in all directions.

“In the end I had to leave, but where does one park in Rutherglen on a busy Friday afternoon? From now on I will do my shopping in East Kilbride.”

Tim Vaughan of Moorgarth Group Limited said the car park was in such a terrible condition they had to add another £85,000 on to their previous £300,000 repair bill estimate.

He added: “The water is pouring through to the shopping centre, these are essential works that have to be done.

“Unfortunately there is going to be some disruption.

“I can only apologise to our customers.

“We have to do it, we’re losing about 80 car park spaces in the short term but it hopefully be done by the second week in November. We simply don’t have any option.”
