Gateway Stadium would need to be brought up to standard

THE Clyde Gateway Stadium will have to adhere to SFL regulations as well as SFA guidelines before Clyde can bring senior football back to Rutherglen.

If Glencairn and Clyde push forward with their plans, the stadium will be in line for an extensive revamp, just four years after it opened.

The ground was built to replace the old Southcroft, which was demolished to make way for the M74 extension.

Although the changing facilities are excellent, there are other aspects of the ground that will need to be brought up to standard.

SFL guidelines relate to issues including floodlighting, perimeter fencing and spectator accommodation.

Currently, the stadium has no seats for fans.

Clyde manager Jim Duffy visited the stadium last year and said: “At this moment in time it’s no where near ready for professional football but there is plenty of scope for development.

“They’ve got the pitch, the terrace area and the dressing rooms, although there is plenty of work to be done.

“You’ve got to consider a number of other factors though such as the local residents, the council, funding; there’s a multitude of things.”

Clyde director John Taylor, said it was too early to put a price on what might need to be done.

He also said there were no concrete plans in place just yet, but a “broad plan,” could be submitted as soon as the two clubs reach an agreement.

He added: “At this stage the cost of the project would depend on the extent of the development that needs to take place.

“Right now we are just discussing the possibility of developing facilities; there has still to be agreement reached between both clubs.”

Mr Taylor also refused to comment on whether future plans would include the football parks at Burnhill.
