Games mascot comes to Rutherglen

Oct 3 2012

by Kenny Smith, Rutherglen Reformer

The 2014 Commonwealth Games mascot ,Clyde, is coming to Rutherglen today (Wednesday)!

For Clyde, the thistle man, will be attending a rugby event at South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture’s school.

Originally scheduled to take place at Cambuslang Rugby Club, the poor weather has forced the event to be moved to the newly-revamped Fernhill sports area.

The festival will run from 10am until noon, and will feature youngsters from all over South Lanarkshire.

Rugby development officer Fraser Stott is hoping that Mother Nature will be kind to the young players and the spectators and said: “Hopefully the weather will stay dry and we can have a good day.”

And as part of his national tour of Scotland, Clyde will pop along to take in some of the action.

The mascot, which has been named after the river which flows through the host city, Glasgow, was designed by Beth Gilmour (12) from Cumbernauld.

She won a UK-wide competition, which attracted more than 4,000 entries.
