Cambuslang Parish Church halls to re-open after revamp

Sep 12 2012

by Kenny Smith, Rutherglen Reformer

CAMBUSLANG Parish Churchs Kirkhill buildings are set to be officially re-opened this weekend - three years after they closed.

In September 2009, the church were forced to temporarily close their halls in Cairns Road as structural works needed to be carried out on the building after a crack was found in the rear wall.

And since June, the necessary work needed to bring the halls, which were completed in 1897, back into use has been taking place.

Fortunately, the crack was not as extensive as had been anticipated and a complete refurbishment has taken place.

And now the halls will be officially reopened this Saturday by South Lanarkshire depute provost Pam Clearie at 2.30pm, with community groups being invited to go along and see the facilities for themselves, with a view to possibly using them in the future.

Minister Rev Dr Leslie Milton: Were delighted that the halls are able to open up again and were looking forward to their being used by organisations in the church and the wider community.

We have now set up a management team which is looking to develop partnerships with other community organisations.

The Reformer understands that there are talks taking place on the historical side of the buildings, which will be undertaken in partnership with the Friends of Cambuslang Park. At present a small group of people are undertaking heritage training, which is being provided by South Lanarkshire Council.

Other uses for the halls could include weddings, conferences, concerts and as a meeting place.

A church spokesman added: On September 15 , the halls of the Kirkhill building of Cambuslang Parish will be officially opened after a long term of inactivity.

The halls have been extensively decorated and all structural problems comprehensively repaired.

In order to fulfil their potential, an opportunity is available to many organisations outwith the church to derive great benefit through hiring the premises.

The suite of halls consists of a large hall suitable for sport, social functions, large meetings, drama productions and concerts.

There are two smaller halls, a working kitchen and ample toilet facilities.

Come along and view the facilities and meet some of the groups already using the Halls. It may be that you are connected to an organisation that would benefit from these facilities.

Take the opportunity to visit the Kirkhill Sanctuary and view the Sadie McLellan windows.

There will also be an organ recital between 2.30-3.30pm by our own Bill Ritchie.
