CAMBUSLANG Rangers had their clash at Lesmahagow rained off on Saturday morning - but there was no let up for the players. Boss Alan Wardlaw got on the phone to his friends who have a boxing gym, and arranged a tough workout for the side, to keep them in tip-top shape. And he believes it’s a move which will help his side in the long run, as not only does it keep the players physically fit, it allows them to have a good hard workout in a totally different environment. Alan said: “We got the call through at 10.30 to say the game was off, so I got straight on the phone to Jim and Paul Kean, to see if there was any chance we could go up and use their boxing gym and five-a-side pitch in East Kilbride. “They were kind enough to say yes, and I’ve got to thank them once again for all their help, as it’s a huge benefit to not only the players, but the management team, as it’s training with a difference, which keeps the players happy too. I can’t thank the Kean’s enough. “It’s absolutely fantastic up there - we got in two-and-a-half hours of boxing, stamina work, and then went on the five-a-side pitch, so it was certainly worthwhile.” This Saturday, Cambuslang Rangers hope to return to action when they travel across Glasgow to face St Anthony’s. Alan said: “Looking over the results of the last few weeks, everybody is beateing everyone else, if you take Glencairn out of the equation. “It will be a very difficult game, as they’ll now be looking to get some momentum into their season. It’s always close when we pit our wits against them. “So far, they’ve taken four points from their first three games, so they’ve won one, drawn one and lost one. They’re not scoring many, but they’re not conceding many either. “But I stand by what I’ve said before - if we can play to our potential, we’re more than capable of beating anyone in this league. This Cambuslang Rangers squad is more than a match for anybody on its day. “When we lost 5-2 in the sectional league cup to Glencairn, we were quire naïve, and nthey definitely deserved to win. If we’d had a bit more about us, maybe we wouldn’t have conceded five. “Looking at the table, it’s still early doors, but there’s only three points between second place and eighth. “St Ant’s will be looking to kick start their season , but we’ve a couple of wins and defeats to our name, and we want to keep our run going and make it three. “You always want to consider the opposition, but we will only worry about ourselves. “I’m looking forward to going over there - it’s a very, very good playing surface over there, which suits our game perfectly. “It matches our philosophy of getting the ball down, although sometimes you do have to play the ball from back to front to force a wee bit of pressure, but we prefer to get the ball down on the deck.” |
