Volunteers vital to Games, says Coe

00:25, Feb 28 2013

Lord Coe has told would-be volunteers that their contribution during Glasgow 2014 can ensure the city hosts a "great Games".

The final deadline to apply for volunteering at the Commonwealth Games closes at midnight on Thursday. Up to 15,000 people are needed to become "Games makers", in the style of the volunteers from the London Olympics and Paralympics.

According to Lord Coe, chairman of the British Olympic Association, volunteering is "vital" to the event.

"The difference between a good Games and a great Games is the volunteers and that's you," he said.

"If you want to make sure the Games are remembered and inspire generations of young people for years to come, make sure that you have supported them and that you are there as a volunteer. Get that application in now. Volunteering is vital because a Games simply cannot be delivered without them. It is too complex and too complicated.

"You need people that understand not just the location but also the nature of sport and the needs of the competitors. Finding the right volunteers makes the difference, as we found from London 2012."

Lord Smith, chair of Glasgow 2014, said: "As London 2012 demonstrated, volunteers are at the heart of delivering a successful Games and they will be central to the creating the warm and friendly atmosphere we are focused on achieving during Glasgow 2014.

"We have been so enthused by the response so far but would encourage anyone who wants to be part of what will be fantastic success story for Glasgow, Scotland and the Commonwealth to act now and ensure their volunteer application is in and complete."

Organisers said there has been a strong public response since applications opened on January 14. Once the applications close, a shortlist of 25,000 people will be interviewed in Glasgow between April and December.

Applicants must be aged 16 or over, be eligible to work in the UK and must be available for at least eight days during the Games between July 23 and August 3 next year.
