A rare painting that hung unloved in its owners' spare room is expected to fetch up to £300,000 at auction later this month.
The Stirlingshire-based seller of Pink Roses by renowned Scottish Colourist Samuel Peploe said his mother turned up her nose at the artwork when his father brought it home in the early 1960s.
The painting, which was consigned for decades to the spare room, has been valued at between £200,000 and £300,000 ahead of its auction at McTear's Scottish Still Lifes, Fine & Contemporary Pictures Sale in Glasgow on October 25.
Managing director Brian Clements said: "Pink Roses is a stunning painting that shows Peploe at his very best.
"It may not have been to the original owner's taste but judging from the interest that has been shown so far it is clear there are a number of collectors who are very impressed by this remarkable piece by one of Scotland's most celebrated artists."
Peploe (1871-1935) was a Post Impressionist painter and, along with John Duncan Fergusson, Francis Cadell and Leslie Hunter, he was a founding member of the group that became known as the Scottish Colourists.
He is noted for his still life works featuring fluid brushwork, dark backgrounds and strong lighting, McTear's said.
Four Peploe still life works sold this year at auction fetched an average price of almost £395,000.
In May last year his work The Coffee Pot sold for £937,250 including the buyer's premium - said to be the highest price ever paid for a work by a Scottish artist at auction.
