His return to Midlothian after serving his sentence has been the subject of a long-running protest by some members of the local community.
Around 30 people gathered around Dalkeith Country Park to protest against the BNP's presence.
Lothian and Borders Police said "an extensive police operation" was put in place to minimise disorder and maintain public safety
Superintendent Phil O'Kane said: "Today's police operation was centred on keeping our communities safe, providing reassurance and keeping disruption to a minimum.
"I would like to thank members of the public for their patience and co-operation, particularly with regard to the temporary traffic restrictions that were put in place as a result of today's activity."
