Scotland is preparing for more winter weather after a day of disruption for commuters and the Met Office has warned of snow and ice.
All trunk roads are to receive one full winter treatment in response to the conditions forecast, according to Transport Scotland.
This comes after a day where wintery conditions caused disruption across the country which Transport Scotland acknowledged and offered sympathies to road users affected.
Although traffic alerts were issued across Twitter, radio and web, many Monday morning commuters fell foul of the conditions with the AA breakdown service receiving up to 1,800 call outs in central Scotland which is estimated to be more than a 25% increase on the average, according to the AA.
There were also 12 cases of people stuck in snow and ice this morning who requested help from the AA.
"The sporadic heavy snowfall combined with morning peak traffic volumes, a number of incidents and breakdowns at critical locations has caused more delays than we would normally anticipate for this type of weather event," said a spokesman for Transport Scotland.
"Poor weather can cause disruption and our Operating Companies have plans to minimise this," he added.
All 90 frontline gritters will be out on the trunk roads with a further 40 gritters patrolling through the night.
Yellow "be aware" alerts have been issued by the Met Office across Scotland for icy conditions while a similar warning for snow has been issued for the north east, as well as the Orkney and Shetland islands.
"Overnight tonight it will turn very cold with snow showers mostly in the north of the country but not too frequent and temperatures will fall to -7 and -8 degrees Celsius," said Gareth Harvey, senior forecaster for MeteoGroup, the Press Association's weather division.
