RAF staff rewarded with honours

00:25, Dec 29 2012

A number of RAF service personnel have been recognised in the New Year Honours.

Group Captain James Johnston, former Officer Commanding of RAF Kinloss, receives an OBE.

The Moray base is now an Army barracks after the Air Force were withdrawn, and Captain Johnston has been recognised for his leadership during the period.

He said: "I am humbled by the recognition that this state award represents. It is recognition of the fantastic efforts of all personnel at RAF Kinloss and the very dignified and stoic manner in which they executed the most unenviable task.

"Most will recall on the 19th of October 2010 I announced that we had our decision and we would move on; the region has come a long way in the last two years and it would be wrong not to also acknowledge the very real support of the community, the Moray Council, the Scottish Government and the Scottish Office."

Wing Commander Roddy Dennis also receives an OBE for his work as the Officer Commanding of 6 Squadron, based at RAF Leuchars in Fife. He has been responsible for Quick Reaction Alerts in the north of the UK for the last two years.

Wing Cdr Dennis oversaw the introduction of a new type of Typhoon aircraft to the squadron and led them in a successful overseas training exercise at short notice. Under his leadership 6 Squadron haven taken on the additional role of the RAF Typhoon Display Team.

Three Warrant Officers (WO) based in Leuchars are also honoured in the list. WO Kevin Foxwell, latterly of 58 Squadron, will become an MBE for 30 years of "epitomising the highest personal and professional qualities".

WO Nick Styles and WO Calum Ferguson are to receive the Meritorious Service Medal for their contributions in RAF catering and personnel management respectively.

Another group of servicemen based in Lossiemouth receives the Air Officer's Commanding Commendations.
