Funeral held for canoe death girl

04:25, Sep 5 2012

The funeral of a five-year-old girl who died after a canoeing accident which claimed the lives of two other children is being held.

Grace Mackay was one of six people in the boat which overturned in Loch Gairloch, near Ullapool in the north-west Highlands, on Sunday August 26.

The primary two pupil from Muir of Ord, near Inverness, was rescued from the sea loch but lost her fight for life the following day at hospital in Glasgow.

Brothers Jamie, 2, and Ewen Beaton, 5, also died after being plucked by helicopter from the water and airlifted to hospital. Despite extensive police and coastguard searches, the boys' 32-year-old father, also Ewen, from Beauly near Inverness, has yet to be found.

Grace's father and her eight-year-old sister Callie managed to swim to the shore and raise the alarm. Her funeral will be held at East Church, Muir of Ord.

Grace's family previously paid tribute to their "beautiful angel".

In a statement, they said: "Grace was a funny, caring, thoughtful daughter and granddaughter, full of life who loved animals and being outdoors. She adored her family and was our beautiful angel. We are devastated by the loss of our best friend."

The girl's headteacher also paid tribute to the Tarradale Primary School pupil.

Grace was a "happy, thoughtful little girl who was popular and well-liked by everybody," Tracy Sinclair said. "This has come as a shock to the whole school community and we are all deeply saddened."

Earlier this week both families thanked the emergency services and local community for their help. The Beaton family said their focus remains on finding Ewen and bringing him home. The funeral service for his two sons will be held on Friday in Inverness.
