Freezing temperatures and drifting snow showers are continuing to grip Scotland, with motorists warned to take extra care on icy roads.
The Met Office has issued yellow "be aware" weather warnings for most parts of the country. The worst hit areas are expected to be in the north and east, where up to 10cm of fresh snow could fall on higher ground.
A strong, sometimes gale-force, northerly wind will make sub-zero temperatures feel even colder, forecasters said.
Matt Dobson, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "It will be a cold start with air temperatures hovering around freezing or just below. There will be a strong northerly wind and that wind-chill will make it feel more like minus 6C or minus 8C; a very raw start to the day.
"There will be sunny spells and scattered snow and sleet showers throughout the day. Overnight the showers will fall mainly as rain and sleet, but increasingly as snow, and with the air temperatures falling there is a risk of ice.
"The conditions will affect the whole country, but particularly the north and east. Glasgow might just get away with it, but there could be some drifting snow flurries."
The Met Office has warned of snow and ice in Grampian, Tayside, Fife, central Scotland and the Highlands and Western Isles, while Orkney and Shetland can expect further heavy snow. Its weather warnings for these areas are in place until midnight tonight.
Strathclyde, the Lothians and Borders and south west Scotland have been warned of ice early this morning following a partial thaw overnight. This Met Office alert is in place until about 11am.
The Met Office said people should be prepared for travel disruption. Aberdeen City Council said a team of gritters will be out treating roads from 4.30am.
The Scottish Environment Protection Agency also issued a flood alert for Caithness and Sutherland, where rain has resulted in rising river levels. It said the situation will improve throughout the day as the rain eases off and turns to snow.
