The accident involved one car, a white Honda CRX, which left the road at 10.15pm on the A709 Lochmaben to Lockerbie road, near Lochmaben.

The driver, a local man, died at the scene while his 21-year-old passenger, also local, was taken to Dumfries and Galloway Infirmary in a serious condition.

The road was closed for several hours while crash scene investigations were carried out. It was reopened at 4.50am.
