Anti-domestic abuse awareness drive

00:25, Nov 25 2012

A campaign which aims to highlight the reality faced by victims of domestic abuse has been launched.

Scottish Women's Aid's Together We Can Stop It drive looks at why women do not leave a violent home and what part people can play in making it stop.

Audio recordings of case studies, using actors' voices, are to be released on the charity`s website, www.scottishwomensaid.org.uk, today to mark International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

The clips will also be distributed through social media and they will be made available for use on the radio.

They were created with the help of student Brunon Rogowski at Edinburgh College's recording facilities, to draw attention to the stories behind the statistics.

The winter campaign will be carried out in three phases with support from the Crown Office & Procurator Fiscal Service (Copfs), the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit (VRU), advocacy and support service Assist and police forces.

It is hoped the work will encourage victims to report incidents of domestic abuse.

Lily Greenan, manager of Scottish Women's Aid, said: "Domestic abuse is about so much more than any one incident, we hear from women who tell us that they and their families live in fear each and every day.

"Responses from the police and justice system are improving all the time, but we need everyone to come together to play a part in ending domestic abuse.

"The support of friends and family is often what gives women the strength to seek help in the first place."
