Fishing quotas talks set to resume

04:25, Feb 14 2012

Talks to secure international agreement on fishing quotas are resuming after four failed rounds of negotiation.

The Scottish Government said the talks in Iceland are the last opportunity for the "sustainable" fishing of north-east Atlantic mackerel this year.

Discussions involve the European Union (EU) with Scottish representation, Norway, the Faroe Islands and Iceland.

Fisheries Secretary Richard Lochhead said: "Mackerel is a high-value stock for all the countries that participate in the fishery, therefore it is common sense that we work together and ensure the stock is sustainably fished.

"However, this has not been the case over the past three years. We need a new four-way international agreement that will safeguard the long-term sustainability of the mackerel fishery.

"Therefore, I call on all parties to work together constructively and negotiate reasonably."

The talks are being held in Icelandic capital Reykjavik. Earlier annual talks ended with bilateral agreement between the EU and Norway.

Last year the Faroes set a mackerel catch of 150,000 tonnes, up 75% in a year and five times the agreed share from 2009.

Iceland set its own increased catch of about 147,000 tonnes last year.

The decisions led to anger among the Scottish fishing fleet and the threat of sanctions by the EU.
