The prominent tower-feature in the Clyde Valley skyline and the stunning building that accompanies it is a beautiful example of modern design and technology. This is the buliding that plays host to the Motherwell Heritage Centre.
The Centre was opened in November 1996, built on the site of the former Motherwell Swimming Pool, and contains a number of attractions to entertain both children and adults.
The two-storey building and five-storey tower is a four star Scottish Tourist Board Commended visitor attraction and was 1997 winner of the best audiovisual programme in the Scottish Museum of the Year awards.
The centre contains different exhibitions that are designed to take you on a journey through the history of Motherwell right up to the present day. The first stage of the journey is to Technopolis, which is a permanent exhibition.
Technopolis begins the journey in roman times and, through the use of four characters, tells the story of the area up until the 19th century. The story then continues through the industrial revolution and the 20's, 30's, World War's One and Two and into the 50's and 60's. A detailed account of the now demolished Ravenscraig steelworks is also included.
A local studies library is in the centre that contains information on all aspects of the area's past. The library contains books, CD-ROM's, maps, photographs and newspapers dating back to 1862 on microfilm. And for the ardent Motherwell football fan, there is also a huge database on the club.
