Lying
a few miles to the north of Hamilton, Bothwell Castle was one of the
largest and finest castles in Scotland.
The 13th century castle, built by Walter de Moravia, started
getting constructed in 1242 but was never fully completed because of the
Scottish wars of independence.
The fortress was captured and recaptured by the English and the
Scots and has been dismantled, rebuilt and then destroyed again before
remaining as the beautiful red sandstone structure that it is today.
The size of the castle is astonishing and amazingly what there is
today is only a portion of what was originally planned.
In 1935 the castle was put into the hands of the state and is now a
tourist attraction open all year round.
On Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays the castle is
open from 9.30am to 4pm, Thursdays from 9.30am to 12noon and on a Sunday
from 2pm to 4pm. Admission for adults is £2 and more information is
available by calling 01698 816894. | |
