Rovers make point to deny Fifers title joy

Mar 12 2008

JOHN McCormack hailed his side for overcoming the odds to spoil the promotion party at Bayview on Saturday.

The Rovers boss was delighted with the 0-0 draw which prevented runaway leaders East Fife lifting the championship.

And he admitted he used the talk of celebrations in Methil to fire up his own side.

He said: “I thought the players worked really hard.

“Everyone was talking about East Fife winning the league and of course I used that to gee-up the players before the game.

“We worked very hard and could have nicked something at the end of the game.”

It was an excellent effort by a side shorn by a host of injuries.

Robert Walker and Jamie McKenzie are close to making a comeback but Callan Adam and Brian Smith are still some way from fitness after a couple of months out.

Iain Chisholm limped off during Saturday’s game and faces missing the remainder of the season with knee ligament damage.

McCormack added: “It’s a real blow for Ian and we don’t have our troubles to seek.

“We have been stretched to say the least but I’m hoping Robert Walker and Jamie McKenzie will come into contention soon.”

Rovers were due to play Stranraer last night and have another test at home on Saturday when play-off chasing Montrose visit Cliftonhill.

The Coatbridge club are 13 points off a play-off spot themselves but McCormack believes his side have an outside chance of making a late run into the top four.

He added: “Montrose will be a tough game but we’ll just keep plugging away and see where that takes us. There is no shortage of effort from the players and if we go on a run, who knows what could happen.”
