Charity the winner at Monklands Masters

Jun 5 2008

THE annual Monklands Masters Charitable Trust Pro-Am took place at Drumpellier Golf Club on Sunday.

No less than 38 of Scotland’s top professionals battled it out for the top prize money.

Among the field of competitors were local professionals Ian Taylor and his assistant professional Ross Neil.

Along with the professionals were 38 amateur teams representing many local companies who participated in the team event.

However, the whole purpose of the day’s golf was to raise money for local charities such as the Airdrie Hospice and McMillan Nurses and without the help of all competitors and sponsors this would not be possible.

For the charity, this would be the last ever pro-am run by the Monklands Masters Charitable Trust as Drumpellier Golf Club have elected to run their own pro-am from next year.

The course itself was in great condition. However, the day was divided into two with glorious sunshine for the early competitors and heavy rain for the later entrants.

It should be mentioned that the heavy rain did not have a real effect on the scoring for the seven professionals who achieved under par all played in the later parts of the day.

The eventual winner was shared between Stephen Gray from Hayston and David Orr from East Renfrewshire who both shot a 5 under par 66.

This is the second time Stephen has been in the prize money in as many years as he was second last year with a 68.

Sharing third place was Alan Lockhart from Ladybank and Gordon Law from Uphall who shot a 2 under par 69. Gordon only received an invitation at midday on Sunday after Owen Leslie from Prestonfield had pulled out.

Local professionals Ian Taylor, and Ross Neil scored 72, and 75 respectively.

The team winner was Drumpellier’s Garry Speirs team who won by one shot from seven teams in second place by scoring 13 under par 58.

The winning team consisted of Garry Speirs, Guy Shanks and Graham Gillick. Their professional was Fraser McLaughlin from Bothwell Castle.

At the prizegiving, chairman of the Trustees of the Monklands Masters Charitable Trust, George McGuire thanked all the teams and professionals for their participation and kind donations to the charity.

He did take time to thank all companies and sponsors for their continued support of the event this year and over the many years the Trust had run the pro-am.

His final thanks went to all the members and staff at Drumpellier for once again putting on a wonderful event.
