Airdrie Darts title goes down to the wire

Jun 5 2008

WORKMENS B darts team were on cloud nine on Monday night after they defeated the Airdrie and District League Champions, The Fourways.

The result means that both teams are on 35 points and will compete in the play-off for the title at the Stables Bar, in Plains, on Monday, July 7.

An enormous task was made easier for The Workies when, fresh from his television appearance in the Welsh Open, Reynolds beat Graham Anderson in 18 darts to take the first game.

The Fourways though came roaring back in champions’ style.

Derek Cunningham just outpointed Jackie Bryce with a 22-dart win and the home side went ahead when Rab Townsend eventually got home after a great start against John Hunter.

A maximum for Jim McGeary contributed to his 20-dart win over Jim Wood to take the Fourways to a 3-1 lead.

Gerry Brown reduced the deficit when he looked in top form with a 19-dart win against young Frank Quinn and the match was then sensationally levelled when Scott Gibb won in 22 darts against former Airdrie champ Gordon Watterson.

Mick Burke restored the home side’s lead when he won in 16 darts against Davie Cunningham.

But it could have been better had his throw not been disturbed by an over zealous fan wandering on to the oche.

The game was tied at the break when a 22-dart win for Rab Waite saw off any challenge from Shug Rice.

On to the doubles and, with the Workmens having to win three out of four, they had it all to do.

The Fourways came blasting out in style with the big guns of Cunningham and Anderson, who cruised home in 16 darts.

So it had to be three wins in the last three games to ensure the play-off and the B Boys lifted their game to the challenge.

Brown and Wood won in 21, followed by Reynolds and Gibb winning in the same score.

With the finger nails bitten to the quick, it was Waite and Cunningham against Burke and Quinn in the decider.

Some could not look, but they would have heard the cheer from Rab Waite to confirm that this year’s championship will be going to a play-off.

In other games, The Clansman secured third place by beating The Workmens A and Clarkston were fourth after whitewashing the Workmens C, who take the wooden spoon.

Whiskey Joe’s beat the Boarshead 8-4 and the Swan and the Cue Here shared the spoils.

Monday, June 9, will see the last 32 of the Singles Championship and the last 16 of the doubles played down to the finals night.
