THE Advertiser’s recent exposé of Internet giant YouTube has made it to the White House after Airdrie MP John Reid brought it up with one of the most powerful politicians in the United States. Former Home Secretary Reid discussed our story about local kids posting videos of playground fights online with President Bush’s Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff. They were meeting in Washington to discuss ways that both governments can crack down on terrorists using the Internet but our report about schoolyard violence appearing on the web also made the agenda. And just this week the Advertiser has also discovered that youngsters across Monklands are risking their lives by filming daredevil stunts that also appear on the popular video-sharing site. At their recent Washington summit the ex-Home Secretary told his US counterpart: “Before we start I want to put my Member of Parliament’s cap on and raise an issue brought up in my local paper.” Speaking exclusively to the Advertiser, Mr Reid added: “I told Mr Chertoff all about the case and the failure of YouTube to tackle the problem and he said it was something that he would look at. “The United States is the main supplier of Internet providers and any pressure the US government can bring to bear will be appreciated.” Turn to pages two and three. |
