HORROR SMASH

Jun 5 2008

By Charlie Rowney

TRIBUTES have poured in for a teenager who tragically died following an horrific car smash in Bargeddie.

Anthony Reilly (17) suffered serious injuries and died in hospital shortly after the accident, which happened on Langmuir Road in the early hours of Friday morning.

And this week emotional messages have been left on gonetoosoon.co.uk for the Calderbank lad, who friends affectionately dubbed “Meatball”.

The site has received more than 1500 hits and devastated mates have left messages of condolence, lit virtual candles and posted pictures in Anthony’s memory.

Cousin Debbie Gardner left a heartfelt message on the website. It reads: “There aren’t enough words to describe how much I loved you or how I'm feeling right now.

“If I had known the last time I saw you was going to be the last time ever, I would never have let you out of my sight - I love you so much and always will.”

Many floral tributes, Celtic and Rangers football strips, cards and poems have been left outside the Braehead United Free Church, where the accident happened.

One tearful friend, 17-year-old Emma Findlay, also of Calderbank, told the Advertiser on Friday: “This is such a shock. I can't believe it.

“I have known Anthony all my life and went to school with him. He was a great guy.”

One floral tribute left at the scene, near to Rosebank Terrace, read: “To Anthony Meatball. Missing you already. Calderbank won't be the same without Meatball.”

A page has also been set up on social networking site Bebo in memory of Anthony, who has a twin brother.

Shortly after 1am on May 30, the convertible BMW in which Anthony was a passenger collided with a metal fence and hit a wall.

The driver, believed to be an 18-year-old friend, escaped with just minor injuries.

Two witnesses also had to be treated for shock following the smash.

Langmuir Road runs between the roundabout at the Showcase Cinema and Coatbridge Road and goes from a 60mph limit to a 30mph zone.

Police confirmed a report was being prepared and would be sent to the procurator fiscal.
